Over de functie

Part of our Research & Development organization, the department Analysis & Prototyping Support (50 employees) contributes to product developments and research subjects from an expertise point of view. The department houses several specialist measurement techniques, develops and ensures sufficient knowledge on crucial subjects related to printing technologies and maintains relations with external (research) partners. Within this department you are part of the Chemical Analysis cluster (~14 professionals). This team is working closely with counterparts at product development teams on a collection of subjects such as inks and ink components, toner, media, emissions and product safety.
To expand the team we are looking for a Materials Analyst (chemistry)to identify material composition and its origin.
The candidate will work with vibrational (FTIR and Raman) spectroscopy and -microscopy, which are applied to elucidate complex material interactions between inkjet inks and a myriad of materials that these inks come into contact with, during their lifespan from production up to the final printed product. Vibrational spectroscopy is used to identify deposition/reaction products that have formed and to determine their chemical composition.
In many cases, the origin of material interactions can be traced back to one or several of the components that the ink consists of. Additional information to make this connection can be obtained from the elemental composition of the ink (components), for example, using X-Ray Fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). With this technique, the candidate will contribute to solving interaction problems by performing (pre-)screening measurements that can either directly solve the issue at hand, or provide insight into which follow-up analysis plan is the most suitable.
Proven experience with FTIR and/or Raman spectroscopy, as well as with elemental composition analysis (XRF, ICP-OES, or comparable) is required for this position. Affinity with thermo-chemical materials characterization techniques, such as Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), is a plus.

Who are we looking for?

  • Minimal requirement is a BSc degree in Analytical Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, or a closely related field. In addition, 3-5 years of relevant (research) experience is desired.
  • Profound knowledge of and experience with FTIR and/or Raman spectroscopy is required. Experience with relevant microscopy techniques (e.g., FTIR microscopy, SEM-EDX) is a plus.
  • Experience with elemental composition analysis (XRF, ICP-OES, or comparable) is required. Affinity with thermo-chemical techniques, such as TGA, is a plus.
  • To be successful, the candidate must be able to work independently and with an analytical mindset. The candidate has good communication skills and is proactive, preferring a hands-on approach.
  • Candidate has profound knowledge - verbal and written - of English and, preferably, Dutch.
  • Candidate is permissioned to work in the Netherlands, and able to provide, if requested, a certificate of conduct.
