What will you be doing?

  • You are going to develop next generation aftertreatment systems, where you will be actively involved in defining new concepts and developing physics based aftertreatment models.
  • You model and simulate (using the Matlab/Simulink environment as well as in-house tools such as SIMCAT) these systems, which will be used to develop model-based advanced control algorithms  to reduce emissions and meet challenging future emission targets.
  • You also support the real-time implementation of the newly developed control algorithms for emissions reduction, using rapid control prototyping tools, supplied by dSPACE.
  • You define measurement plans for model calibration and validation based on test cell measurement data.
  • You present the technical results at national and international events and publish the research results in peer reviewed journals.
Within our multi-disciplinary internationally orientated team you will have a system developer / integrator role. By focusing on innovative solutions you will play a role in strengthening and further building on our position in the automotive industry. We are an applied research and development organisation, and you will be  working in a wide range of projects ranging from  projects for (international) B2B customers to (European) research projects that further strengthen our knowledge base.
You follow the recent trends and developments in this field and can help translate client needs into working systems and solutions.


What do we require of you?
Based on your education and professional experience you know the influence of the various after-treatment subsystems and their impact on overall emission output and fuel efficiency. You have a good understanding of recent trends and developments. You understand the purpose and background of the application of all components that influence the performance of the after-treatment system.

You have a Master’s degree or PhD in mechanical/chemical engineering or similar supplemented with at least three years of relevant professional experience, in an Advanced Engineering group within an OEM. You have a broad technical knowledge in the modelling and control of emission after- treatment systems for heavy duty diesel engines. You are experienced in direct interactions with (international) customers and can help translate their needs into services and solutions. You are a team player and enjoy achieving results in teams of varying composition. You enjoy developing innovative solutions to technically challenging problems and have the right mix of intellectual curiosity and practical pragmatism. You are willing to travel to international customers.

What can you expect of your work situation?
The research group Powertrains is one of the leading players on emission management technology and has a longstanding track record in the automotive industry. We have developed our own extensive modelling and simulation tools to simulate both conventional (diesel) and hybrid electric power trains and aftertreatment systems.
The group has its own state-of-the-art testing facilities, where we can measure complete engine after-treatment systems for real world emissions and fuel efficiency. We can perform measurements on an entire vehicle (up to truck size) in our unique altitude climate chamber, and perform on-road measurements.
